How Do Prop Firm Payouts Work? Buffers, Splits and Traps
How do prop firm payouts work is the question to answer before buying an eval, not after passing one — because the distance between "funded" and "paid" is where this industry hides its sharpest edges. Between your first funded trade and money in your bank sit buffers, minimums, day-count requirements, consistency ratios and approval reviews, and every firm arranges them differently. Here's the machinery, and the traps that void payouts traders believed they'd earned.
The pipeline from profit to bank account
A typical futures funded-account payout passes five gates:
- The buffer: most plans hold back an initial chunk of profit that can never be withdrawn (across the plans we track, the median is $2,100 on a 50K account and $4,500 on a 150K). It's the account's loss cushion. Your first payout only comes from profit above it.
- Minimum withdrawal: commonly $250 to $1,000, so small wins can't be cashed individually.
- Eligibility timing: a minimum number of trading days, or a fixed cycle (every 14 days is common; the best firms allow daily requests).
- Ratio checks: where consistency rules exist, the payout request is when they're enforced.
- Approval and transfer: instant auto-approval at the best firms; manual review taking days at others. This step is where firm quality shows most clearly.
How the top firms compare on payout terms
Payout policy across the top-ranked firms in our research — this table is generated from the same live data as the rankings:
| Firm | Score | Payout policy | Profit split |
|---|---|---|---|
| MyFundedFutures | 9.0 | Rapid and Rapid EOD: daily payouts, first eligible 24h after the first funded trade, $500 min, buffer $1,100 to $4,600 by size. Builder: requestable 48h after the first trade, min 2 qualifying days per cycle, $250 min (25K) / $500 min (50K), capped at $1,000 / $2,000 per cycle, max 5 sim payouts. Pro: every 14 calendar days, $1,000 min, up to $100,000 per user, 60% withdrawable while still in buffer. Most requests auto-approved instantly. | 90/10 (Rapid and Rapid EOD); 80/20 (Builder and Pro) |
| Take Profit Trader | 9.0 | Withdrawals from day one of PRO, daily/unlimited requests, ~12h processing, no max cap; free over $250. Full 80% split above a buffer equal to max drawdown; PRO+ live is 90/10 with no buffer. | 80/20 (PRO sim) → 90/10 (PRO+ live) |
| Tradeify | 8.0 | Growth and Select Flex: payout per 5-winning-day cycle with per-cycle caps. Select caps were re-cut by purchase date on 2026-09-01: accounts bought on or after 1 September 2026 get Select Flex caps of $1,250/$2,500/$3,500/$4,500 and Select Daily caps of $600/$1,250/$1,750/$2,500 by size, which cuts the Flex 50K/100K/150K caps (from $3,000/$4,000/$5,000) while raising the Daily 50K and 100K caps (from $1,000/$1,500). Accounts bought before that date keep the old caps. Select Daily: payout any day once a $1,100 to $3,600 buffer is reached ($6,100 on the 300K V2), min $250 on 25K to 150K. The Select 300K Daily path replaces the 2x continuity multiplier with a flat $4,000 daily cap plus a 50% new-profit rule; 300K Flex needs $750 winning days and caps at 50% of profits up to $10,000. Processing 24 to 48h via Rise. | 90/10 sim-funded; 80/20 on Elite (live) |
| Topstep | 8.0 | Per-request during CME hours. Standard path: 5 winning days of $150+ per cycle, caps $2,000/$3,000/$5,000 (50K/100K/150K); Consistency path: 3 trading days + 40% consistency, caps $3,000/$4,000/$6,000. The optional Daily Loss Limit add-on doubles these caps on qualifying new purchases (up to $12,000). Max 50% of balance per request; min $125; MLL resets to $0 permanently after every payout. | 90/10 from dollar one (post-Jan-2026 accounts) |
| Phidias Propfirm | 7.0 | CASH accounts: the payout cadence is set by plan type, not by payout number. Fundamental requires 10 trading days BETWEEN payouts; Premium requires 5. A day counts only with positive PnL of at least $150 on 50K, $200 on 100K or $250 on 150K. Min $500. The per-period withdrawal cap is $2,000/$2,500/$2,750 by size on BOTH Fundamental and Premium; Premium's progressive 75% to 100% split is applied to that same cap rather than being a separate lower one. E2L has zero minimum trading days and its first payout converts the account to a LIVE Dorman account, which pays daily with no per-cycle or lifetime cap. The route to Live is now 5 payouts OR $100,000 cumulative (the old 3 payouts / $75,000 rule is deprecated), and E2L payouts do not count toward that review. | 80/20 (E2L/Fundamental); Premium scales 75% → 100% from 5th payout |
| TradeDay | 7.0 | Quick Pay: payout from any positive balance after one funded trading day, min $250, no per-request cap, requests before 5:30pm CT processed within 24h. Fast Pass: 5 profitable days per payout ($100/$150/$200/$250 min per day at 25K/50K/100K/150K), capped at 50% of balance, max $750/$1,500/$1,875/$2,250 per request on accounts opened on or after 2026-07-26 (the 100K cap was raised from $1,850 to $1,875 in the 2026-09-08 policy edit, resolving a long-running conflict with the pricing card) (accounts opened before that date keep the older $2,000/$2,500/$3,000 caps; there is no legacy 25K tier because the 25K size launched after that date). The $10,000 gross-profit live review applies to Quick Pay only, where profit above $10K is forfeited; TradeDay states there is no threshold for Fast Pass Funded Sim accounts, which instead move to Funded Live on the 5th payout request. The transfer to a Funded Live account may take up to 10 business days, and the Quick Pay payout policy governs profits through that transition (rule added 2026-08-31). | Quick Pay: 50/50 while current profit is under $4K → 80/20 above → 90/10 live; Fast Pass: 80/20 sim → 90/10 live |
| FundedNext Futures | 7.0 | NOT unlimited: Flex, Rapid Pro and Rapid Daily accounts are concluded after the 5th Performance Reward withdrawal (Legacy is exempt: it unlocks 100% withdrawals after 30 benchmark days). Min withdrawal $250 everywhere. The minimum profit required in the current cycle is $500 ON EVERY PLAN, including Rapid Daily. THE $250 RAPID DAILY SPLIT IS OVER: article 15878210 was rewritten on 2026-09-09 and now states $500 four times, agreeing with joint articles 15877643 and 15878201, so the $250 figure it published between 2026-08-30 and 2026-09-08 was an editing error that has since been corrected rather than a rule that changed twice. Note that $500 is the cycle-profit gate while $250 is the minimum withdrawal amount; they are different numbers and both are live. Flex: 5 benchmark days per cycle at $200 (50K, 100K) or $250 (150K), up to 50% of accumulated profit capped at $1,500/$2,500/$4,000 by size; cap lifted on the 5th withdrawal. Legacy caps are higher, at $3,000 on 25K and $6,000 on both 50K and 100K. Rapid Pro: every 3 days plus a 40% consistency rule, caps $800/$1,200/$2,500. Rapid Daily: daily, same caps, but only profit above the buffer (starting balance plus max loss limit plus $100) is withdrawable. Reaching live remains UNRESOLVED and the two framings have now swapped places on recency: article 14283903 (dateModified 2026-08-29) requires $100,000 in Total Active Profits OR 5 Flex withdrawals with the live deposit at 25% of eligible profit capped at $50,000, while article 16522296 was re-edited on 2026-09-03 and still requires 15 Performance Rewards to enter the live review pool (5 for returning traders), making the 15-reward framing the NEWEST surface rather than the stale one. The $10,000 figure is NOT a cumulative live-deposit cap: it is the Reserve full-match band, where the first $10,000 withdrawn cumulatively is matched 1:1 and anything above it at $1 per $2. The 15-Challenges-per-month purchase cap was removed on 2026-09-01 and replaced by a cap of 10 FundedNext accounts issued per calendar month; the 5 concurrent accounts per user or household and the $750,000 allocation cap are unchanged. | Flex 95%; Rapid Pro and Rapid Daily 90%; Legacy 80%. The paid 90% Reward Share add-on for Flex has been discontinued and no longer appears anywhere on the site, as has the separate 95% Reward Share add-on offer article. The add-on slot is now a Daily Loss Limit add-on for Rapid Pro instead ($20 on 25K, $40 on 50K, $50 on 100K). |
| Earn2Trade | 6.0 | Weekly: request by 2:00 PM CT the preceding Friday, processed Wednesdays, minimum net $100. LiveSim maximum withdrawal is $5,000 on every Gauntlet Mini size, $1,750 on TCP25, $3,000 on TCP50 and $6,000 on TCP100. Live has no cap. Withdrawal fees: Rise $50 per withdrawal for non-US customers and 1.5% for US customers; Deel $50 per withdrawal; Bayzat $5 to $40; direct crypto 0.735%. Rise does not support payouts for traders in Iowa, Minnesota, South Carolina, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands or Haiti. | Depends on when the evaluation was bought. Bought before 2026-07-06: flat 80/20 in favor of the trader. Bought on/after 2026-07-06 the split is set by the size of the SINGLE withdrawal request, not by accumulated profit: 50/50 below the threshold, 80/20 at or above it. Thresholds by starting funded balance are $1,500 on 25K, $2,250 on 50K, $3,000 on 100K, $4,000 on 150K and $5,000 on 200K. $400K Trader Career Path accounts are a fixed 60/40. The firm's share is deducted monthly or at each withdrawal. |
The first-payout traps
Almost every horror story in this industry happens at the first payout, because that's the firm's last cheap exit. The recurring patterns: accounts terminated for a vague "rule violation" discovered only after a withdrawal request; consistency ratios recalculated to include the buffer; "100% first payout" marketing that quietly excludes the buffer entirely; and firms that simply slow-walk approval while the trader keeps trading — and eventually gives profits back.
This is why payout record outweighs payout terms in our scoring. A documented history of paying quickly, at volume, is the only version of a payout policy that counts. It's also how two firms earned places on our avoid list — terms looked fine; the record didn't.
Choosing on payout quality
If fast, reliable withdrawals are your top priority, say exactly that in the matching quiz — it weights payout speed and record directly. And whatever firm you pick, take your first payout as early as the rules allow, even if it's small: the first withdrawal is the real final exam, and you want to sit it while your balance at risk is low.
Quick answers
How long until a first prop firm payout?
At the fastest firms in our rankings: eligible within roughly a day of your first funded trades, minus the buffer. At slower firms: 14–30 days plus manual review. The firm reviews list each policy.
What profit split do futures prop firms pay?
80/20 to 90/10 in the trader's favor is standard, and several firms pay 100% of an initial tranche before the split kicks in. Split matters less than the buffer, the timing, and whether the firm reliably pays at all.
Can a prop firm refuse to pay out?
Contractually, most reserve broad rights to void accounts for rule violations — which is why documented payout history and clean dispute records are weighted so heavily in our methodology, and why rule-trap firms score poorly regardless of their advertised split.
